Condition
Fever & Infections
Assessment of fever, viral illness and common infections.
Fever is the body's normal response to infection, but the cause matters. Careful history and examination usually point to the right tests — and to when antibiotics are genuinely needed rather than given by habit.
What patients often report
- Fever with chills, body ache or headache
- Cough, cold, sore throat or ear pain
- Loose motions, vomiting or abdominal discomfort
- Burning urination or flank pain
How it is assessed
- Detailed history of duration, pattern and exposure
- Blood counts, malaria, dengue or typhoid tests when suggested
- Urine examination where urinary infection is likely
- Chest assessment if there is a cough
How care is usually structured
- Treat the cause, not just the temperature
- Antibiotics only when clearly indicated
- Hydration, rest and simple symptom relief
- Clear instructions on when to return
When to seek urgent care
- Fever lasting more than three days without improvement
- Breathlessness, chest pain or low urine output
- Fever with rash, bleeding or extreme drowsiness
If any of these apply, go to the nearest hospital or call emergency services — do not wait for a routine appointment.
